Lectures & Courses

Barbara Erwine is an internationally recognized educator in the fields of sustainability, daylighting, sensory design and the integrated design process.  She has taught guaduate and undergraduale level courses at the University of Washington Department of Architecture, the Sustainable Building Advisors Certificate Program and numerous other national and international organizations/conferences including Lightfair, Green Build, and the Illuminating Engineering Society.  Below is a sampling of potental courses and workshops.  Contact Barbara for additional ideas and information.

Sensory Design

Responding to the visually-dominated, sensory standardized environments of the modern movement, the emerging field of sensory design strives to enrich the built environment by exploring all sensory modes. This lecture provides a provocative overview of this dynamic field of design and is illustrated with case studies and images that bring it to life. For more in-depth investigations, this course of study is also available as a series of classes. The series starts with an overview of each sensory mode and an understanding of its biologic mechanisms and perceptual impacts. Participants come to understand the beauty of thermal, light, olfactory, auditory, and haptic spaces and their design characteristics. Explorations are grounded in the study of exemplary historic spaces that demonstrate the power of sensory design and participants explore the power of design when these sensory spaces coincide with or contradict architectural form.  Courses may also include an associated design project.

Integrative Design Process

This one-day workshop explores the integrative design process through a hands-on eco-charrette exercise using either a theoretical design problem or an actual current client design problem.  In the process of participating in the ecocharrette exercise, participants learn how to lead an integrative process that can then permeate the entire design process.  The process addresses site/program analysis, goal setting, iterative design processes, rating system pros/cons and team responsibilities.

Principles of Sustainable Design

This series of classes explores aspects of sustainable design, including responsible resource use (energy, water, materials), site optimization, transportation issues, health and indoor environmental quality, social justice, and  beauty and the spirit of place.  Through this exploration, participants achieve a working knowledge of the integrative design process and the framework of codes, standards and rating systems that support a sustainable design approach.
