Sensory  & Sustainable Design:

Consulting / Teaching / Writing

Barbara Erwine is a seasoned sustainable building design consultant, educator, researcher and writer. Her work emphasizes passive design and energy efficient approaches to resource use in buildings. With a background in both science and architecture, she grounds her design work in technically rigorous solutions that create a sense of place and celebrate the integration of the built environment with the natural world.  She has extensive experience facilitating integrated design processes for a wide range of project types and stakeholders, including commercial buildings, urban neighborhoods, and public lands.

Barbara has pioneered the exploration of multi-sensory design approaches for the creation of spaces that both create a welcoming sense of place and that conserve precious natural resources. For more information on this Multidimensional Space approach to design, click the button to the right.

Barbara currently resides in Puget Ridge Cohousing, one of the earliest cohousing communities in the United States.  She was a founder of this community and was main architectural liason between the community and the design architect.  For more informaiton on this community, follow this link:

“The leading edges of sustainable, place-centered design overlap a wide range of disciplines and expertise.  My work explores the intersections between these interrelated fields and strives to understand how we can sustainably live with equity and beauty in a finite world. If you too are interested in moving beyond sustaining to thriving, then let's talk and see how we all can work together."
